A Year in Review: Favorite 10 Posts of 2016

I love going back and doing a year in review and seeing what posts you loved the most!

Here is the collection. I know we have new readers. It always happens when the Confident Mom Weekly Household Planner is revealed for another year! New moms discover my site and I love that blessing.

We had a year full of adventure – selling our home of 9 years and 80% of our belongings and moving to a remote beach community. You can read more on that in this beachy post (it did not make the top ten – however, it will give you a bit more info on me and my family).

Grab a cup of coffee or tea and check out a few that maybe you missed. You can subscribe to receive my weekly blog posts delivered right to your inbox if you’d like too.

A Joyful Start to Your Morning

A Joyful Start to Your Morning

Now that winter is upon us, it certainly takes a bit more energy and coaxing to get out of a nice, cozy warm bed and begin our day. What helps you get your morning mood going in a positive direction? I have several must have’s for my mornings. I’ve shared my morning devotional time reading and about having a morning routine, but I have not really shared with you my secret – really yummy coffee!

Coffee.

I am quite the coffee snob for sure. You can ask any of my family members – they will tell you! I am picky about my coffee.

There are a few things in life that matter a lot to me, and coffee is one of those things I put in my top ten. I love good, strong, dark coffee – with a little raw milk and ground cinnamon on top. It is perfection. Just for good measure, a few of the other things that matter to me in life are Jesus, my family and friends, my husband, the beach, my essential oils and supplements, worship music, and a nice glass of wine!

I love coffee so much that I am (almost) embarrassed to admit that in our house we have five coffee brewing devices. Um. Yes, we do. We are prepared for large crowds, fast brewing, and those with particular coffee desires – I mean, I can relate!

Morning Coffee

My favorite way to start my day right now is with a strong cup of espresso with some warm raw milk and a dash of ground cinnamon. Since giving up sugar in my coffee, I have been so intrigued with really tasting the marvelous flavors of different beans and the results when they are roasted.

I had the pleasure to collaborate with Gourmesso and have been experimenting with some new coffee blends and let me say – I am in heaven! Gourmesso has convenient Nespresso compatible pods that come in 25 different varieties and they are mostly Fair Trade certified. There are many that fit my realm of strong, dark roasts, but I found two that were particularly fabulous.

Since I really enjoy a rich, deep roast, the House Blend Lungo is my go-to coffee first thing in the morning. It has a slightly nutty flavor and is full-bodied, incredibly rich and perfect with a velvety crema. It’s delightful!

My other go-to is the Honduras Pura Forte. It consists of different roasts of 100% arabica beans. The beans are grown and harvested according to purely ecological guidelines. I love when a company really takes an interest in using sustainable farming practices that benefit the environment.

There is a benefit of enjoying the simple things in life. For me, coffee is a simple pleasure. It creates good memories, can reunite friends, creates warmth in a home, and facilitates good conversation. Finding a simple pleasure to begin your day and bring joy in the morning is very calming to your soul. These are the things that matter.

Since our move in September, I have taken inventory of what really matters and how I can find joy in the small things.

Beach Walk in Seabrook

A walk on the beach out on a crisp cool morning is finished nicely when I return home to brew a cup of rich coffee. I love brewing coffee at home and having it taste better than what I can buy when I am out at a local coffee shop.

Do you have a ritual or part of your morning routine that helps get your day started off in a joyful way? I’d love to hear about it.

I received complimentary coffee pods in exchange for my review and article. All opinions are my own and unbiased.

6 Things Moms Must Do Every Evening

6 Things Moms Must Do Every Evening

You would think I would have this motherhood gig down now since I’ve doing this nearly 24 years – but alas, I mess up and get off track too!

I began looking at my evening routine as part of some struggles I’ve been having lately keeping my patience. Ugh, I hate to admit it, but it’s true. This is even more frequent when I am single parenting and my husband is on the road. And, I am sure I am not the only one.

Here are some key pieces I have determined I need to be sure to put into motion to close out my day with a patient and gracious heart, as well as preparing my mind and soul for rest. I hope you can take a few of these ideas and incorporate them too!

Check Your Calendar for Tomorrow

This won’t necessarily make your evening better, but it will certainly make your morning better! When I can check my calendar for the next day and get a basic plan in my head the evening before, I tend to settle down more easily. Whether you have a calendar digitally or a paper version, get into a habit of checking your next day’s activities so you can do what you can the evening before to start your morning off right.

Connect with Your Husband

If you are married, this is a MUST! Since I have been caring for my body with better food, all-natural products, and using essential oils for my mama mode and moods (aka. occasional stress), I tend to not be as exhausted by evening. It has been a shift for us that as soon as our son is down for the night we can connect. Sharing about our day, talking about upcoming plans, or just watching a favorite show without distractions. My husband is my second priority and I need to be sure I am displaying that in my actions.

Practice Some Self-Care

This will look different for everyone, but for me it is pretty simple. It may be just washing my face with my favorite Orange Blossom Facial Wash to get the grime off me and apply some lavish night time face cream with a drop of Frankincense. Or it may include a nice soak in the tub for 20 minutes with some Epsom salts and essential oils. It is certainly my happy spot! Do you know what your happy spot is? What brings you joy and calms your body? Maybe it’s going for a walk – alone! These are all things that can nourish and refresh us!

Read

I have found more joy the past few months sitting down and reading at the end of the day. It’s not usually for more than 15 minutes, because I do tend to get tired. But the wonderful books I’ve been diving into have been complete bliss. Present over Perfect by Shauna Niequist was so good for me. Perfect for my season of life. I also recently enjoyed Bread and Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes but Shauna Niequist as well. My current read is The Gift of an Ordinary Day: A Mother’s Memoir by Katrina Kenison.

Get Enough Sleep

BINGO! I know so many moms who try to burn the candle at both ends and it takes its toll. Please, for the sake of your health, your family, and your spirit – get enough sleep. This is the time your body refreshes itself. It needs this downtime to run the way God intended it to. I try to get in bed no later than 10:00pm and then I have been sleeping until 6:00am. This works for me, maybe not for you. I encourage you to find a schedule that works and try to stick to it. Research shows a bedtime routine is great and having a set bedtime and wake up that is consistent each day is even better for your body.

Pray

Ending your day with prayer is the best way to leave everything at the Lord’s feet. Some find it helpful to journal their prayers, other’s like me just talk out loud. This has helped me so much to have a grateful heart and reset my soul even if it’s been a rough evening.

What tip here will you begin to incorporate?

Insanely Yummy #21DSD Chocolate Energizing Shake

Oh my word – I can’t believe I haven’t shared this recipe with you all sooner! I apologize now, because once you begin to add this to your daily routine, you will see why I love it so much.

I recently completed my second round of the popular 21 Day Sugar Detox program and this shake was part of my success. The thought of eliminating the sugar from my diet seemed impossible, but I have done it without losing my mind.

I like chocolate and I need quick and easy food. This powerful breakfast shake has become an integral part of my most productive days.

Insanely Yummy #21DSD Chocolate Energizing Shake Recipe

  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 1 cup almond milk (be sure to get a brand that does not have carrageenan)
  • 1 scoop unsweetened protein powder (I use this)
  • 2 Tablespoons organic cacao powder (I use this)
  • 1 teaspoon organic maca powder (I use this)
  • 1/2 teaspoon organic cinnamon (I use this)
  • 1/3 cup organic pumpkin puree (I use this)
  • 1/2 teaspoon organic vanilla flavoring (I use this)
  • 1 green tipped banana

Add all of the ingredients to your blender. Turn it on for 30 seconds and ENJOY!

Insanely Yummy #21DSD Chocolate Energizing Shake Recipe

It may take your taste buds a bit to get use to this less sweet version of a shake, but it is so satisfying and packed full of food our body can really use. Sometimes I use 1/2 cup of brewed coffee that has been cooled too. Feel free to change it up a bit to meet your taste – just NO SUGAR!

A Couple Notes About the Ingredients

I recently discovered maca powder. Check it out. Maca powder has been shown to support healthy hormone levels, enhance vitality, and sustain natural energy levels. It also promotes a radiant complexion and glowing skin. It is packed full of minerals, fatty acids, and plant sterols which offer a wide range of benefits for your body. I have noticed a difference on the days I do not start my day with a shake. I definitely have seen an increase in energy, focus, and motivation!

Pumpkin puree is a great source of fiber, rich in iron, and a great source of Vitamin A which in turn is great for your eyes. It is a low calorie source of a great punch for the body.

I have lost five pounds in my second round of the #21DSD. My taste buds have changed. My body has changed. I have more energy and less inflammation. I wake up feeling ready for the day. I especially love knowing I am reducing the risk of illness from the food I choose to eat. I dare you to do any research about what sugar does to your body and how it is hidden in everything. I am thankful to have education and knowledge. That is power for helping us be the best we can be!

Now, go enjoy this fabulous shake recipe and comment when you have. You will want to share it with everyone! Have you done a round of the #21DSD before? Did you have a favorite recipe?
