Supporting Your Emotions through the Holidays

This time of year is glorious, but it can also be filled with grief, family dynamics that can overload, and incredible amounts of stress.

I have shared my story of successfully supporting my emotional well-being naturally and it has helped so many other moms who struggled as I did. I could not get a grip and relied on methods to help which were truly not the best for my body. Can you relate?

As we enter into this last week of celebrating Christ’s birth, I wanted to share with you how I use essential oils to support not only my own emotional wellness, but also other family members (who may not even be aware)!

During the Christmas season I struggle with grief because I miss my mom who is not here to enjoy the holidays. I am also dealing with blended family issues which make our holiday even more tricky, and the typical family drama that seems to stem even when we try hard to stifle it. This just comes to the surface and if we are not careful – we can blow really easy.

Why Are Essential Oils Effective?

When you inhale an essential oil, the molecules travel up your nostrils to the olfactory cortex, which is embedded within the brain’s limbic system and amygdala, where emotions are born and emotional memories are stored. The olfactory bulb then transmits impulses to other parts of the brain, including the amygdala and other parts of the limbic system.

Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone regulation, essential oils can have a profound physiological and psychological effect. This has been my experience…dramatic changes within seconds, as when you inhale an oil those molecules have entered your bloodstream very quickly and will begin to impact the brain.

Wonderful Essential Oils for Emotional Support

What Do I Use?

Joy – This is my first love for emotional support and well-being. It is powerful with helping the heart, soul, and mind. You will find Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Lemon, Coriander, Tangerine, Jasmine, Roman Chamomile, Palmarosa, and Rose in this blend.

Christmas Spirit – This is a purifying blend of evergreen, citrus, and spice – perfect for the holidays! You will find Orange, Cinnamon Bark, and Spruce. It will inspire joy, peace, happiness, and security.

Stress Away Roll On – This is an amazing blend that brings a feeling of peace and tranquility to all who use it. Say goodbye to occasional stress, tension, and nervousness, plus increase your mental response – love that!

Sacred Mountain – This is an incredible blend that is empowering and grounding. It is a unique blend of Spruce, Ylang Ylang, Idaho Balsam Fir, and Cedarwood.

Peace and Calming – This promotes relaxation and a deep sense of peace and emotional well-being. It is a must for my six year old! It has Tangerine, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, and Blue Tansy.

Valor – This is one of the most popular oils for emotional support. Fabulous blend of coconut oil, Spruce, Rosewood, Blue Tansy, and Frankincense. It is wonderful for balancing energies, inspiring courage, and confidence.

Harmony – You will often find this one in my diffuser necklace. It does just what the name entails – brings harmony and can help dissipate feelings of discord. It is very uplifting and elevating to the mind, helping to inspire a positive attitude. It’s a blend of Sandalwood, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Frankincense, Orange, Angelica, Geranium, Hyssop, Spanish Sage, Spruce, Coriander, Bergamot, Lemon, Jasmine, Roman Chamomile, Palmarosa, and Rose.

How Do I Use Them?

My first line of emotional support is to apply the oils topically to myself and also use a diffuser necklace. I love the beauty of the necklace and it keeps it handy – yes, I can be seen sniffing my necklace from time to time!

I will apply oils topically on my wrist, neck, or spine. I have found that many people love the scent of the oils I choose to wear, and I know that I often get asked for a second hug! I threw out my chemical filled perfumes months ago and chose this natural method for smelling good, because it truly is beneficial for all.

But, one of my top ways is to diffuse essential oils – because I can get the molecules all around my home, so everyone can smell them! This makes creating an environment that is calming or uplifting (whichever I am going for) super easy. And even for those stubborn family members who don’t want to apply oils to their skin, they are breathing in the oils – which as we learned, makes a difference in their emotional balance!

Think about that when you are getting ready to host a big family dinner with lots of different personality types – some Joy or Christmas Spirit diffused in your family room area will help keep the peace. I can almost guarantee it. I have heard sorry after story of family meetings that have went off without a hitch because a knowing host began diffusing before guests arrived!

7 Tips for a Fall Cozy Home

The weather is changing and it’s the perfect time to begin transitioning our spaces at home to warmer and more cozy environments. There is nothing better than coming home from a “frightful” day outside to an inviting and warm space inside.

Here are some easy ideas to turn your home into a cozy refuge.

Throws and Cozy Blankets

The mornings are nippy at our house and we have blankets for almost every person, scattered around. Thick, soft, and easy to throw in the washing machine are a must! I especially love these large size Sherpa Throw Blankets. I will be adding a few of these in our home and bringing some to the beach too!

Carve Out a Reading Nook

Who wouldn’t love a nice spot to lose themselves in a book? Why not create a space just for that? Make sure to have a throw nearby and a cozy chair or a comfy sitting spot with room for setting a warm mug of tea. If it’s near a fireplace, even better – and with a door you can close!

Bring in the Lights

With shorter days it is extremely important to provide some soft light to bring life to your rooms. Add a few table lamps in places you may not have needed them in the summer months – or a floor lamp near a chair or sofa. If your entry way is dark, be sure to add inviting light there. I love these beautiful lights that plug directly in the outlet and provide wonderful warm lighting.

Slippers for All

There is nothing that says “welcome home” like removing your big bulky shoes you’ve worn all day and swapping them out for something more comfortable and definitely more cozy. With this simple step, you also avoid getting all the dirt and toxic chemicals from the outside inside. Have a basket near the door with slippers for the whole family or cozy socks. These cozy slipper socks are great for different family members, as well as guests who come over.

Bring the Outside In

Now is the time to find wonderful treasures from the outdoors and bring some life to your indoor space. Take a vase and arrange branches full of colored leaves, as well as pine cones, acorns, and gourds around the base. It is a simple way to bring fall indoors.

Soups and Stews

A stewing pot or slow cooker (my favorite slow cooker) will infuse your home with delicious aromas and warmth – so amazing to come home to! I have several favorite recipes and one in particular is on my stove today awaiting the arrival of our small group to enjoy tonight. The recipe is over on my sweet friend, Edie’s, blog Life In Grace – Chipotle Pumpkin Soup with Barley and Chicken. (Warning – it is FAB-U-LOUS!)

Sweaters and Cozy Wraps

This is the time to bring out the sweaters and cozy cardigan wraps. I love pairing them with leggings for around the house or dressing them up with jeans/dress leggings and boots. There is nothing better than being able to layer clothing to stay warm and cozy. I have just added to my Stitch Fix notes for my stylist to include a few new sweaters – they always have such great styles and textures I would normally not choose for myself.

Add Soft Light

I used to love candles in my home, and especially scented ones to celebrate fall, but times have changed. I have learned many of the candles and the scents in them could actually be making me feel worse. I have switched to battery operated candles with no lit wick burning and I have my wonderful Young Living Home Diffuser going with whatever scent fills my fancy. Not only does my house smell great, but we are getting benefits from the essential oils being dispersed through the air.

My Easy Window Washing Secret Revealed

2015

I really hate window washing – and truly hate climbing a ladder to wash high outdoor windows.  So when my hubby and I came up with a solution to washing our high windows that get layered with salt spray that actually worked fabulously, I knew I had to share.  It is my easy window washing secret!

We own a little vacation home on the Washington coast, which will sometime in the future be a full time home for us, when we escape city life and settle down for life in the small beach  community, called Seabrook.  I shared a bit of our story on how we saved our pennies for years to get the funds for this dream of mine in my ebook, Become a Frugali$ta.  It was a true sacrifice and took planning and a blessing from the Lord as well.

Until we move to this spot full time, we rent our home – so we take pride in keeping it in tip top shape, which includes having windows that sparkle so you can see the ocean view.  (About a year ago, The House Of Turquoise shared our home on her blog, it was a fabulous coincidence – so jump over and take a peak inside!)

Okay, back to washing windows!!!

We have developed a system for our outside high and low windows which makes washing them very simple and frugal.  We use Young Living’s Thieves Household Cleaner, which is a concentrated cleaner, so we can mix up just the right solution we need to get the scum off our windows.  We also use this cleaner for all other household cleaning, like tubs, showers, toilets, floors, counters, inside widows, dusting, ovens and more.  We do not buy any other cleaner now.

Why do I love Thieves?

It has incredible cleansing power and an even safer, more sustainable formulation. It contains ingredients from renewable plant and mineral sources, vegetable-based surfactants, and Thieves and lemon essential oils for extra cleaning power.  It is an all-in-one solution for all surfaces.  No toxins, no chemicals and no risk!

I love this simple chart explaining the cost savings of it versus other cleaners that Niki Faris created.

Yep, it is a cost saver, plus it is safe for our entire family – even our pets.  (By the way, I really love it for pet stains too – it is amazing in the carpet cleaner!)  And even though this video is for washing outside windows, it is just as easy to use indoors and I either use a rag and wipe clean or use the squeegee that comes in the kit I share about below.

Here is a short video showing how we use this tool, the Ettore 17050 All Purpose Window Cleaning Combo Kit and the cleaner to wash our windows at our beach home.  It is easy, quick and effective.

To view the video, you will want to click thru to the blog post.  There is a bit of wind noise, as it is always breezy at the beach, but you will hear me explaining the process.

Isn’t that fabulously easy?

For those who want to know where to grab some Thieves Household Cleaner,  you can get it as a retail customer with Young Living or at a savings of 24% with your wholesale membership.

Easy DIY Laundry Pods with Essential Oils

I have shared before that I am not much of a DIY person. I enjoy a few things, but for me, I would much rather buy many household items for cleaning and caring for the home. But, there is one in my household who does enjoy it – my 22 year old daughter! Lucky me (and we benefit)!

She stumbled on a recipe a few weeks ago. We tweaked it a bit and made two batches in an afternoon. It was super easy and we already had the supplies on hand. As soon as the pods were ready, she washed her bed sheets and was hooked. Her sheets were fresh, clean, soft, and smelled great!

DIY Laundry Pods Recipe

  • 3 cups washing soda
  • 1 cup Fels-Naptha
  • 4 T Epsom salt
  • 6 T hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • Essential oils (we used Citrus Fresh and Stress Away)
  1. Grate Fels-Naptha and mix in a bowl with washing soda and Epsom salt.
  2. Add hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. It should resemble wet sand.
  3. Add 30 drops of essential oils.
  4. Press into tablespoon-sized balls and drop onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Let sit and dry for 8 hours.
  6. Store in an airtight container and enjoy your laundry day!
