Getting Started with Essential Oils



My inbox is crammed full of wonderful emails from you all asking me how to get started using Young Living essential oils, what oils I recommend and how I’ve managed to help support a healthy immune system for me and my entire family.  So I am here to answer some frequently asked questions.

I can hardly believe it’s been almost two years since I took control and was empowered with my health needs and can honestly say I have never felt better.

Today’s post will help you get some questions answered and give you the chance to begin your journey using essential oils.

How do I use essential oils?

I felt a bit lost when I first started looking at what I could do to improve my health.  There was a lot of information out there and many alternatives to my traditional way of caring for my health.   But I had to make some changes for my emotional and physical health.  It was critical for me and my family – most especially with my diagnosis with an auto-immune disease.

In our home we diffuse essential oils, apply them topically, use them in detox baths, add to recipes and we also take some internally when needed.  After much research and trial uses of different essential oils from many companies, I chose Young Living.  Any recommendations I give on how we use them anywhere on my blog, only refer to Young Living.

One thing is key when you begin using essential oils.  You have to change your perspective a bit with natural additions to supporting your body and it’s immune system.  Our society has been accustomed to taking a pill for an ailment and then not thinking about it for another 12 hours.  With essential oils, there is a difference.  You will find greater success using them more frequently and more consistently.  When I wake up in the morning and get that feeling of not quite being 100%, I am consistent with application, sometimes every hour until I see improvement.

How should I begin?

This is probably the most common question I get.  Usually, unless there is a special circumstance, I always suggest someone purchase the EO Premium Starter Kit.  This is by far the best value, it’s the only thing Young Living has that is over 50% off retail.  It also has the best variety of oils to use in your home.  It is an investment, I will kid you not…. but if you have to save up for six months in order to get the Premium Starter Kit do it!  Or ask for it for Christmas.  The diffuser is one of the biggest benefits of the Starter Kit and it is a MUST have item.

7 Healthy Habit Changes for Busy Moms



It’s the busy back to school season and often times we mom’s get left behind!  We focus on the needs of our family – which is a true calling, but it can leave us feeling a bit worn out.  I thought I would gather up my top 7 tips for habits that you can start today to help you and your body function better so you can be equipped to serve your family.

Here we go….

1. Waking up early

I was going to put “waking up at 5:30 AM” but you know, that is not for everyone – so I left it open a bit for you to apply what works for you.  The only clarifier is that you need to wake up with time to get your own ‘act together’ so you can be ready for your family.  This might mean leaving enough time for devotions, prayer, listening to worship music, having a shower, exercising or other self-care needs.  

It is important to be ready to face your day both physically and mentally.  For me, I need to get up by 5:30 AM to get the items accomplished that leave me ready to face my day, for you it may be completely different.

2.  Eat breakfast

Yep, it is really the most important meal of the day!  I tend to keep things fairly simple for myself and my kids, but when my husband is in town he enjoys doing a whole spread – so I let him!!  Some of my quick favorites are scrambled eggs, a LaraBar (just grabbed these blueberry ones with a $4 off coupon too!) or my newly discovered quick breakfast is Young Living’s Balance Complete (an amazing meal replacement beverage full of nutrients and enzymes and tastes great – really – it is a vanilla little hug in the morning!)   

Give your body some energy – don’t try to “save calories” by skipping breakfast – your body needs that energy to start your day off right.

3.  Daily Movement 

Get your body moving!  I work from home and often spend several hours sitting, writing and making phones calls – which can leave me stiff and sore, which can be exacerbated due to my Lupus.  I have to incorporate some type of movement into my day, whether it is my Focus T25 routine I am involved in, training for a half-marathon, taking the dog for a walk or fitting in a Pilates workout (my favorite one!)   If you like simple routines and one that will help lengthen your body, it’s the BOMB!

4.  Support Your Immune System

I have to be very aware of this one with my Immune Challenges, but I think everyone needs to be cautious of taking care of themselves and their family.  I keep things in check by doing these things:

– Washing hands thoroughly with Thieves Foaming Hand Soap several times a day and use my Thieves Hand Purifier – love that stuff!  If I am not careful, my 4 year old would bring home all kinds of lovely preschool gifts to me!

5.  No more Soda

Give up soda – yes – I said it!!  I am one who loved a good diet coke, and have probably drank enough in my life to fill the Great Salt Lake – but since I have given it up I feel better.  I certainly don’t miss what it could have been doing to my body and how about these lovely facts?  ICK!  I find it interesting that once I began my essential oil journey and making some other healthy choices, like giving up soda, I rarely experience discomfort in my head.  When I do, I realize that I really need to give attention to something in my body, because it is not normal for me.  I try to hone in on what my body is screaming out to me, and I am very empowered with the ability to get immediate help using essential oils.  

6.  Seek Quiet & Stillness

This can be hard as a busy mom, but so worth it.  Even if you can only squeak out 5 minutes of peace….just wait – you might be able to combine it with #7 next!!  There is something about finding stillness that can refresh our spirit and be very healthy.  Our brains need rest and we need to be able to just ‘be’.  No TV, no iPhone, no computer, no radio…..just stillness.  I find myself getting this in the morning…. I loved this blog post where  Michael Hyatt shared on this topic of stillness.

7.  Take a Weekly Bath

My body has benefited HUGELY to getting in the tub once a week!  I love adding Epsom Salt for the amazing benefits plus dropping in some of my favorite oils too, like Lavender or Rosemary.   I shared in more depth here on the advantages of Epsom Salt baths – they are truly a gift you can give your body and it doesn’t cost a lot of money and fills a need your body actually craves – detoxifying and stillness.  I can guarantee you’ll sleep like a baby too!

No More Excuses Summer Workout



It is almost summer – YIKES!   Yep, that bathing suit weather is upon us and I think I will just run and hide  🙂

But you know, our fitness and ability to be in good physical shape is way more about how we feel overall, not if we can look like the models we may see on magazine covers.  It is truly about being healthy, eating well and caring for the vessel that God has so graciously blessed us with.

So, this summer I am stepping up my game and I want to take you on the trip with me.  For most of my life I have been a runner – and at different times I have added in Pilates, Hot Yoga, Cross-Training and Walking.  I love to train for a half-marathon, but my body is aging a bit and injuries are more frequent than not.  I shared about my most recent frustration with running in this post last week.  Several years ago I shared about meeting another blogger who was running in a race I did in Vancouver – fun!

But running is hard on the body – so I thought it was time to switch things up.

So for the next 11 weeks I am doing something completely “not” normal for me.  I have begun using Shaun T’s FOCUS T25 Base Kit – DVD Workout.  I started Monday and wanted to wait a few days into the program to write a post about it, really seeing if it was something I would/could continue.  Well I just completed Day Four and ladies, I love it!

Here is what I love about it:

25 Minutes! 

It is only 25 minutes and I love that.  Especially with summer, traveling and finding time to workout, I can totally make 25 minutes work if my mind is set.  Anything longer is unrealistic in my opinion.

Easy Moves

There is no hard choreography – seriously!  I am not at the stage of my life where I can be a flash dancer!  The moves are simple, easy to understand and totally doable for a uncoordinated one like me.

Each Day is Different

For each day of the week you have a different workout – so it is not like other workout DVD’s where you do the same one day in and day out – which gets BORING!  Yes, this pack is more expensive, but you have 9 different workout DVD’s to keep you pushing through for 10 weeks.  No boring here!

You Get Sore

I will say the first few days of any workout are hard – I like that I am sore and feeling like parts of my body that I have not worked on are being worked.  As a runner it can be easy to over-build the lower body, and my approach over the next 11 weeks is to do this overall body workout and then return to my running game – stronger, in better condition and overall better core shape, which will help my running game.

Perfect Morning Workout

I have began a new routine for summer and I am sticking to it.  It is tough and some mornings I will really truly hate it, but at 5:20 AM the alarm goes off, I get up, spend an hour in God’s word, praying and journaling and then am hitting the floor with Shaun T by 6:30.  By 7:00 AM I am DONE!!  It feels fantastic – there is something to be said to be done with a workout and feel good about it by 7 AM!  I can enjoy the rest of the day.
