Week Five – The Best Yes

weekfive

This week we are talking about avoiding the traps of people pleasing.  I honestly never really thought of myself as a people pleaser, but now that I am examining different areas of my life and why I feel led to say YES to so many, I can see that I fit in as a people pleaser too.

If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.  Galatians 1:10 NLT

This week we are reading Chapters 13-15 of The Best Yes.

I loved listening to these chapters while I drove back ALONE in my car from doing an essential oils class last week.  It’s not very often, as I know you all can relate, that I am in the car alone with silence enough to do such a marvelous thing!

I went back and re-read the chapters briefly, underlining and highlighting so I can share some key points from my perspective with you all tomorrow.  I love how our discussions on the Facebook page bring in so many different viewpoints and really open up the discussion.  I think about things that were not even on my radar when someone else shares from their heart.  Community is key in getting even more out of a study.  đŸ™‚

I was especially touched with this line of the book this week, “Don’t waste it.  Let it make you aware.  be an extension of God’s love right now.”   I want to keep this close to my heart and be used – open to His whispers.

Did you see where our blog, this space is opening up to care for another Compassion child??!!!!  I am thrilled.  Everyone is making a difference, every little bit and I am so thankful I was aware and open to hear His whisper to use this place for that calling.

“We want big directional signs from God.  God just wants us to pay attention.”  pg 170

If you are participating in the extra reading of Proverbs, you’ll want to be sure to read Proverbs 26 – 31.

I will see you back here tomorrow with my thoughts on this weeks reading.  Be sure to hop over to the Facebook page and share in the community!

Obeying God’s Instruction

1tuesday2

Do you remember the last time you messed up or missed out on something because of a choice you made?  How about ordering the steak at dinner but then you wonder just right after you order if you really should have ordered the Tilapia?

I could so identify with the story Lysa shared about her daughter in the drive thru line – that overwhelming feeling that perhaps we wish we’d made a different choice.  Now food is rather trivial….. but it gives a clear perspective for us on how in real life we are in situations all the time where we could regret the decisions we’ve made.

“And we girls don’t like feeling we missed out.  Or messed up.  Or misstepped right out of what should have been or what could have been.”

I am a procrastinator with decisions, because I don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings, I get overwhelmed with the ideas and or requests and it paralyzes me.  Can you relate?

I know this book is for me because I am in a season where I truly need to look at what my BEST YES decisions are.  Where does God want me to be, what does He want me to do – or NOT do.

What I highlighted:

“I dread saying yes but feel powerless to say no.”

“We’ll tell you all about our broken places of yesterday but don’t dare admit the limitations of our today.”

“I’m tried.  I’m distracted.  I’m disappointed in myself.  I feel slightly used and more than slightly used up.  I’m a little overwhelmed and a lot worn down.”

“I asked the God of the universe to intersect my life with HIS revelation, then got up from my prayers and forgot to look.”

“Unbroken companionship helps us hear His instruction so then we can see His direction.  We must not seek direction before obeying His instruction.”

“We live reactive lives instead of proactive.  And reactive lives get very exhausting, very quickly.”

Just two weeks ago I sat in the middle of my bible study group and admitted I was worn out, exhausted and barely hanging on.  There were many reasons, some brought on by my own actions and decisions, but a few not, like suffering from a back strain which produced it’s own group of problems.  I hate feeling like that, but am so thankful I could at least admit it to someone.  I am human too, but most of the time expect myself to just be like the energizer bunny….just keep going.

The problem is, at some point you cannot keep going at the same rate and continue to add things to your plate and think it will all work out.  It won’t.

I wonder when I quickly add things without thinking – what am I missing out on that God might have in store for me? I want to learn to truly hear what God is saying to me, not just sitting in the morning and spending time and then leaving it all there – on my nightstand.

That last quote I shared from the book from my highlighted notes – living a reactive life….. yeah, I kinda feel like that is where I am right now….. putting out fire after fire… and it is very exhausting. Perhaps you are in the same boat, just longing for change.  The time is now…. and I am here with – you joining you in the journey.

I pray that during this week you are refreshed with hope – that you can begin right now to start making good decisions, the decisions that really matter in the big scheme.

Be sure to stop over on the Facebook page for conversation on what we are reading.  You’ll love that you are not alone and we are all struggling.

Here is a PDF printable of the Scripture verses I ask about in the Facebook page too, so just in case you didn’t get them there, please download them here!

9 Traits of a Life-Giving Mom – Week Four

Main-border-study

We begin week four of our journey reading Sue Detweiler’s book, 9 Traits of a Life Giving Mom: Replacing My Worst with God’s Best.

That dreaded word….anxiety.  Why does it seem it is more prevalent today than at any other time?  Or is it that we just manage to talk about it?  Was it just as common, but just not talked about?

Week Four

Read  Chapter Four – Replacing My Anxiety with God’s Peace

Trait 1:  Peace

Anxiety is no secret to me – seems that the older I get the more issue I have with anxious feelings and recognizing when they begin to rise up.  Worry can go hand in hand with anxiety as well as insecurity and lack of confidence.  I can struggle with these emotional issues at different times.  But the one thing I need to remember is God is there, and He knows what I am feeling.

What can I do differently to hand off whatever I am concerned about to trust Him completely.  My anxiety issues are better than they used to be, but I can certainly learn to allow Him to be present more and prove the peace that He promises.

If you haven’t printed out the prayers that are covered in the chapters click HERE on Sue’s website.  Here is this week’s one for Peace – it’s a good one!

Main-border-study

We begin week three of our journey reading Sue Detweiler’s book, 9 Traits of a Life Giving Mom: Replacing My Worst with God’s Best.

Sadness, depression, loneliness – all words that can easily describe us at different times.  I know for myself, depression and sadness is a struggle – I suffer from chronic depression, yet through God’s grace and His amazing medicine, I am currently able to prayerfully journey through it, even amidst the daily struggles I face.  This chapter was a really good reminder for me, that He is greater than it all.  When I focus on truth instead of what my mind likes to permeate me with, all things are better.

Week Three

Read  Chapter Three – Replacing My Sadness with God’s Joy

Trait 1:  Joy

I find myself needing more Joy, minute by minute.  I have trouble identifying with those who just exude Joy, this is not something that has supernaturally come to me, I will be focusing on this chapter and how I can allow it to permeate my daily walk.

You can also begin the questions in the Study Guide, which can be found in the back of your book, Lesson 3.  Have a journal you can write down your answers and reflections to the questions – be honest and spend some time here ladies.  The more you put into these answers the more progress you will have in this study.

I will be back tomorrow with a quick post on my thoughts about Chapter Three and will introduce some questions through out the week on the private Facebook page.

If you haven’t printed out the prayers that are covered in the chapters click HERE on Sue’s website.  Here is this week’s one for Joy – it’s a good one!
