When Self-Care is Non-Negotiable

I’ve been away from blogging for two weeks – remember me?  My last post shared about the essential oils I planned to bring on my international trip.  Well, I returned from said trip on Sunday, having had a much larger adventure than I planned.

I arrived in Venice with a pulsing finger, infected from an earlier simple procedure my dermatologist had done – a huge bummer to deal with while overseas, but I did come armed and prepared!  Then I began having digestive issues which became a much bigger issue and I spent two days in a Croatian clinic dealing with that (the entire experience will be a complete blog post, so stay tuned for that!).

We returned to our cruise ship after a crazy day of “The Amazing Race” type travel to enjoy the last three days of the cruise and had a great time.

But on the day of return our flight was delayed, we missed our connection and had one more day away from home.  I was exhausted, worn out and depleted beyond what I could ever imagine.

Usually I tend to just ‘buck up’ and keep pushing when things get a bit tough.  My plan was to come back to blogging Monday – yes, three days ago…..but that didn’t happen.  I was tired and I needed some time to adjust back to normal life.  I was away for 13 days – crazy!

But here I sit, trying to ‘get back to normal’ and I am severely struggling.  41XVyWa4iyL

While I was away on my vacation I read the book,  “Nourished:  A Search for Health, Happiness, and a Full Night’s Sleep” by Becky Johnson and Rachel Randolph.  It was just what my mind needed to hear and my heart needed to have permission to feel.  I know see the timing of me reading this book, was not a by chance encounter, but a divine intervention.

So, instead of rushing back to a blogging schedule I am taking some time for self-care – to nourish my soul and get the rest my body was craving when I left on vacation, but certainly did not receive.  The saying, “I need a vacation from my vacation,” is certainly true for me this time around.

So I may be a bit infrequent here, but know I am caring for myself in ways I so encourage other moms to do, but rarely allow myself the grace to fit it in.

I will be:

Sleeping when I am tired

Allowing God to speak to my worn out heart

Taking time to enjoy my kids during the first part of summer

Supporting and reviving my body – all naturally so it can serve me well

Focusing on my marriage and being more intentional

Those are just a few of the things I will be more worried about than writing a blog post.  I am afraid if I don’t allow the time and space for my body to recover and fall in place, things could get rather ugly.

I love that word, Nourished.  I don’t know that I have ever even put it in the same sentence as myself – but for now….I am taking time to Nourish myself so I can be who God wants and desires me to be.

I’ll be back to share my adventure and some fabulous pictures with you too!

Week Four : The Fringe Hours – Relationships

 Week four a

This week will run a bit different, you have all week to read three chapters as we discuss them on the Facebook page.  I will do a final closing post on Friday – so really take your time and allow this week to fill your heart, energize you and allow the message to sink in.

Being an introvert, I find it hard to be around a lot of people at a time – but I do enjoy doing activities and spending time with smaller groups.  Community – that is what we are truly made for – relationships.

As a mom who works from mom, does most of her interactions online and has a husband who travels 3-4 days a week, I find myself in a little cocoon.   I find myself alone all week long, so this chapter was encouragement for me to stretch myself and make time to get out and meet up with friends.

I can’t wait to discuss what elements of these chapters truly resonate with you!

“One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand to be understood.”  Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Week Three : The Fringe Hours – Overcoming Obstacles

Week three bI have never been one that finds it easy to ask for help, just ask my husband.  It’s like pulling teeth!  For me to stop and open my mouth to physically ask for help  is almost seriously impossible for me.  I am sure there are some big reasons as to why – but it has created problems for me.

I have to get better in this area.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that I waste time when I have to focus my brain on tasks that need done.  That is why I love things like the Weekly Household Planner, which spell tasks out and I can decide whether I want to do them or not.  However, I do not waste time trying to figure out what needs to be done each week.  Relief!

I also know that asking my family for help would relieve me of many stressful tasks and I know they would be wiling to help too, but I have an underlying issue that is spelled…. C-O-N-T-R-O-L.  Yep, I like to be in control.

In this chapter there are some great tips to focus on and remember as we head into our days with long lists.  The work of many will help ease the tasks of just one person.  When a family can share in the work, it makes it better for all.

Several years ago I relinquished to hiring a housecleaner.  Yes, the one who faithfully puts out a cleaning schedule has a housecleaner!!  But you know, it was an area that I had to give up and allow someone else to help with so that my strengths and passions could be used elsewhere (on this blog and mentoring others with Young Living.)  It was pivotal in my business and family life.

I still do many of the home keeping activities, but it is a relief to know that I can be reaching out to another mom on a phone call and or writing a blog post rather than mop my floor.  God has gifted me, just like he has you and during this season, He has blessed me with a housecleaner so I can be used in different ways.

“You can’t do everything, so don’t fall into the trap of trying.  Instead, find the moments in each aspect of your life that invigorate you, and imbalance your life toward those.”  –  Marcus Buckingham

Week 2 Chapt 6

This is YOUR time for a new beginning….. how does that make you feel?

  • Are you inspired?
  • Deflated?
  • Uplifted?
  • Significant?

For me I feel all of those things.  I love to come up with new plans and be inspired for a new routine, but to be honest I tend to allow life to squeeze right back in where I tried to make a u-turn.   Follow thru is not a big strong point for me, but I know one day there will be a shift so I continue to push forward.  🙂

I have gotten out of my habit of rising early – I used to get up before 5:30 AM and it has slowly shifted to 6:30 AM – UGH!!  I miss it.  I need to be more disciplined to get back to my routine…. so that is my goal this week… to slowly shift my alarm 15 minutes earlier each day.

I also have never tracked my time.  I will be doing this task as well.

Week 2 Chapt 4-5

As we move forward into this section of the book, you will be challenged to begin to be proactive in finding pockets of time to include your self-care needs into your day.  This is where building upon open tid-bits of time with small habit changes will help you develop new routines.

Change is hard.  We fight against it even when it is good for us!  Do you agree?  I have the hardest time to incorporate new routines even when it is things I enjoy.  We are creatures of habit.  Let’s burst forward with new energy to make a new reality!
