My {new} Love of Essential Oils

You’ve all been asking, “When are you going to talk more about essential oils?”  So – finally, I am sharing!

It all started about two months ago when I had been sick. I  was searching for other ways to get over the cold and flu season – and it was all of you who started me in the right direction, and I will be ever grateful!  I shared on the Facebook page about being sick and you all commented on using essential oils as well as Elderberry Syrup, which is now a staple in my frig!  I began looking at essential oils and I will never look back – it has been amazing!

I tried several brands available on amazon, they were okay, but to be quite honest, I just didn’t see remarkable results.  As I did my research I realized there was a lot I didn’t know and if I was going to incorporate oils in our home, I wanted to make sure I was getting the best.  I read blog posts others had done on the different oil companies and finally decided to try Young Living.

I am not here to pitch one oil company against another, but for me and my family Young Living was the best choice.  I’ve been thrilled with the results of all the different oils I’ve discovered so far and I want to share how I’ve been using them.

I’ve really gotten a new way of living here!  I am having so much fun.  For me personally, smell is a big part of what influences my mood.  I’ve shared a few times that I’ve battled balancing my emotions for years, over 20 years to be exact.  One thing I do know is that aromas do influence my moods.  So when I began using oils and reading about which oils helped with emotional support and mood I was so encouraged.  When you breath in the oil molecules, they reach your “smell receptors” which are linked to your nervous system – which send out tiny impulses along nerve fibers.  It all comes together in the center of the brain where we interpret smell.  Incredible really, but makes perfect sense.

Without going into a bunch of details , let me just say – I am working through balancing my moods and emotional state completely naturally with the help of using essential oils in my home.   I wish you could see me jumping up and down right now!  {BIG HAPPY DANCE!!}

It has been fun diffusing oils and applying them topically – I have yet to take them internally, but that is on the list! Young Living oils can be taken internally because they are 100% therapeutic grade unlike cheaper perfume grade essential oils.

Here are a few of my favorites I’ve been using:

WOW!  It is an amazing immune boosting blend. I’ve been diffusing it in order to keep the house resistant to all the undesirable microorganisms that invade each day!  I’ve also been rubbing it {diluted in grapeseed oil} on our feet before bed to help keep us boost our immune system.

Who doesn’t love the smell of lemon – yum!  I’ve been soaking my dish rag in a bowl of water with a couple drops of Lemon oil and it freshens it up.  Then I dump the water down my drain, which makes the sink smell so good.

Lavenderlavender young living oil

I have always loved the smell of Lavender.  I have a Lavender bed pillow and now can refreshen the Lavender smell with REAL oil.  Diffusing it in the house is divine – so relaxing and subtle.

I’ve been using a rinse in my laundry white vinegar and Lavender oil – just take a 16 ounce bottle of plain vinegar and add 20-40 drops of oil.  Shake it before each use and pour 1/4 cup in your rinse spout of your washing machine.  This is really a nice fabric softener.
I place a couple drops inside a toilet paper roll before I put it on the roller and every time someone takes a bit, they are getting a little “poof” of good fragrance – and in our home with 4 boys, I can use all the good fragrance I can get!
Can’t avoid the bath topic either!  I’ve made more of a routine of taking baths – at least once a week.  The combination of silence, the warm water and the drop of Lavender in the water are beyond wonderful.

I recently got this essential oil blend – which is amazingly beneficial for mood.  I am sitting here right now as it diffuses next to my desk.  I’ve been dabbing it behind my ears and on my wrists to give me a boost too.  It smells lovely – a wonderful mixture of oils, including geranium which is highly used to boost mood.

I love learning more and more about natural ways to stay strong and healthy and heal our bodies as much as possible without chemicals. I am researching more ways to incorporate oils into a routine to help with all our immune support needs.  Essential oils are blessing my family in our journey of natural living and I am very hopeful for our future!

**ADDED NOTE**  I’ve had several emails after this posting asking me about other oil companies and my help with finding ‘the best’.   Let me say this – I am not here to push you to Young Living, rather I wanted to share with you my journey and my discovery.  I encourage you to do your research to make the best choice for your family.  I just decided I would feel most comfortable working with an oil company who was the leader in the industry and had been around since 1973.  I wanted a company with integrity and experience, that is why I chose  Young Living.  Your research and needs for your family may differ and you will know which fit is best for you.

Thank you for this post. I’ve been looking forward to hearing what you had to say from your experience with essential oils. A friend of mine mentioned putting lavender oil/diluted water on a baby that she sat for who has eczema. In a matter of just a few days it was gone. I was intrigued. My #3 has this condition as well as other allergies and within the past few weeks has had a flare up on one of his hands/wrists and now the other hand is getting it. It’s very itchy and painful and he’s even had to move his watch over to the other arm because it’s irritating his condition. This is a first as far as the where, but not the what. So, I finally found some lavender oil at Whole Foods and we shall see. I put some on him this morning. I didn’t know about mixing the grapeseed oil though. I look forward to reading up on the ebook. Thank you for offering it up to us.

  • My pleasure! It was fun!! The grapeseed oil is nothing special, just a carrier oil. Obviously it adds moisture too. I’ve put Lavender oil directly on my little guys face, when he has a small break out from an irritating food, that really helps clear it up too!

I love this blog! Alyssa introduced me to it and I am here to second you on how wonderful Young living oils are. They are life changing at the very least. I’ve used several oil brands and was hurt physically by them so YL is the choice for my family too. Guaranteed for purity and potency, it doesn’t get any better than that, does it?

  • Thanks April for stopping by! I do agree, everyone must do what is right for them and I have found what is right for me. So life changing and I hope that my kids will benefits for generations to come!

  • Dana

We have used YL oils for about 10 yrs now & would use nothing else. I love how much money they have saved us by keeping us out of the doctors office. I love how my kids first thought when they get hurt is, “get the Lavender” or when they start feeling a cold come on they look for the Theives oil. They have grown up using them & are healthier for it!

  • Susan, I am curious to know what oils you use to fight depression.

  • I’ve done some looking inline and have two books I refer to – also the group of ladies who part of a private facebook group provide a lot of excellent advice and suggestions – that is how i get most of the information – from others who’ve tried different methods, oils, etc. The support we all share is really excellent!

  • Thanks for the tip on using lemon oil to treat warts Susan. I’ve been searching the internet high and low for natural wart remedies. Did you friend apply the oil topically or did she take them internally?

  • Elena

Susan, I am new to young living & so far love them. Which 2 books do you refer to & what is the name of the FB group, if you don’t mind sharing??!

  • Genevieve

    Thank you for sharing!

  • I have a client with Lupus (I’m a nail tech) and her hands itch terribly. Have you found any oils that are specific to Lupus that may help her?

  • There are products with oils that are very beneficial for itchy skin, but I would wonder if trying to determine the underlying issue for the itchy hands would be better. I’ve not heard of Lupus causing itchy hands, so would be curious about her diet perhaps and if she needs to stop dairy and gluten – I love Lavender and Frankincense for itching….. also a product Young Living has called Animal Scents is a great moisturizing ointment!

Susan I am hopeful you can help me in finding answers in the oils for my mom who has had lupus since I was born 28 years ago and for almost 22 years my mom has been on prednisone which is not good!!! She is finally willing to give YL ois a shot as she has hit a wall and her Lupus has Flared up and I am really worried about her and how bad this Flare up is. Please help with and insight. Thanks in advance!!!

  • I will be sending you an email with a document of what I’ve done and how well I’ve progressed since I’ve started using Young Living oils and other supplements 🙂

Thank you for this informative post! I have been wanting to try YL essential oils, but just keeping putting it off because of the price, which I know is reasonable for all you get. My daughter and I have had the sinus crud/cold and I wish I had the oils now to diffuse. Is it pretty easy to get started?

I love this blog very much! I use lavender, peace and calming and stress away in one diffuse and I get the best night sleep! Also if your kids are not eating enough oranges you can put one drop of orange oil in a glass of water and it will taste like orange water. I drink it all the time when I’m sick and its amazing!
