“We have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…..we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.” – Charles Swindoll
I think I need to read that quote everyday, how about you?
It is so easy to begin our day fresh and full of energy, but soon things begin to happen ‘to us’ and our attitude is quickly altered by those around us. I think this is one of the key things to keep in mind when trying to be the CALM mom we all want to be. Managing our attitude in the midst of all the drama!
How do you do this?
I’ll share with you some ideas that help me keep my attitude in the right place, and believe me – I need an adjustment several times throughout the day! But knowing and understanding what you need in order to re-focus will be critical to the mood of not just you, but your entire family.
I have got to get some kind of exercise/movement for myself each day. Even if it is just 15 minutes outside playing ball with the dogs and running around, I need that. When the blood starts running through my body vigorously, it seems that I can feel the stress lessening.
The days that I make the effort to get up earlier than everyone else are the days that go smoother, I am less stressed and my mood is centered. When I don’t get up early, my family notices.
Grab a hug
I was raised in a family which didn’t really show affection with hugs and kisses, so it has been an area of growth for me to change my comfort level in order to show this to my children. I know when I need a break, I will just stop one of my kids and give them a hug and take a moment. I am sure this is more for me than it is for them!
Make sure you are getting enough rest, there is nothing like lack of sleep to put me on the edge. Sleep is not a luxury it is a necessity! If you are not getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night you are not going to be at your best.
Sometimes I find myself going so fast all day that I forget to eat! I tend to remember when I start getting frustrated over very small things. Now I try to have small bites throughout the day to keep my energy up. Having fresh fruit, vegetables and healthy energy bars handy keep me from eating something I will regret later.
What ideas do you have for other moms that help you?
