Beating the Heat

Welcome to the 30 Days of Summer – Go-To Guide for Moms!

Day Twenty Two

It isn’t necessarily all that easy to keep the kids busy all summer long, especially on particularly hot days, the days when the kids come into the house five minutes after you send them out, complaining it’s too hot outside!

What can you do to keep them busy, short of turning the AC on full blast, driving up your electrical bill and letting them watch television or play video games all day? Plenty!

Cool Treats

First of all, have some cheap, cool treats on hand. Otter Pops or homemade popsicles don’t cost much, and you just have to enforce the rule that they are eaten outside to limit the mess. These may only keep the kids out for a short time or they might find something fun to do outside anyhow.  I purchased these great Tovolo molds from amazon a few weeks ago {loved that it was only about $10!!} They are easy to clean and even easier to fill and freeze.  We’ve been experimenting with different recipes for homemade popsicles and frozen yogurt pops.  I’ve been collecting recipe as I find them over here on my pinterest board – take a peek!

Morning/Evening

Try getting the kids outside to play in the earlier and later parts of the day, when it’s cooler outside. Then you won’t feel so bad if they’re watching television in the hottest part of the day.  In fact, if you know the temperature is going to be unbearable – why not have a movie day inside or plan to have a board game day?  Have some fun snacks on hand and join in for the fun.

Get Crafty

Inside activities are great and if you are running low on ideas, that is what the Summer Survival Calendar is for!  One great activity a day will keep the boredom at bay.  If you’ve found a favorite activity, keep supplies on hand to do it multiple times and you’ve got a built in safety net!

Get Wet

Of course, just because the kids are complaining that it’s too hot outside doesn’t mean you have to give in and let them play inside. If you have a yard, get those kids into swimsuits and sunscreen and turn on those sprinklers. You know you loved running through the sprinkler as a kid. You don’t even need to buy the ones designed for kids to play with, jut make sure yours is fairly kid friendly – low to the ground, no sharp edges and so forth.

Escape

Find an escape that everyone will love – perhaps the library or other indoor air conditioned location will fit the bill for a fun diversion for your family?  A museum is a great idea to spend the day indoors, nice and cool while enjoying some interesting sites, or perhaps a movie.

What is your go-to activity for HOT days?
