Weekly Household Quick Tip

Tackling this daily task in the Weekly Household Planner:

Declutter bookshelves/magazines

This seems like an easy task and I find myself often just skipping it!  Yep, I admit it – I skip some of the task!  But when I do take the time to weed through my bookshelf and get rid of books that I no longer need or know I won’t read again, it helps an entire room feel less cluttered.  So, let’s hit those bookshelves ladies!

Start With One Shelf

Often when I look at a project that is BIG, I tend to forget how to break it down into smaller pieces – and this is exactly what you need to do with decluttering a bookshelf.  Do one shelf at a time.  Take all the books out, wipe down the shelf and then slowly go through the books as you replace the ones back on the shelf that you feel you need/want to keep.

There was a time when I would keep every book I ever purchased, thinking that I would need it one day.  Today, my philosophy is much different!  I have realistic expectations of myself, truly knowing whether I will need a book in the future, and honestly if I think I will and really like it, I just purchase it on my kindle so it is not taking up the space in my house!  (My Kindle was the best purchase I made for 2012!)

Use Magazine files

If you subscribe to magazines and need to keep the entire issue make sure to corral your magazines together, either by stacking or using magazine files for a crisp, clean touch.

Bins and containers

No matter how hard we try to organize a space, sometimes items just aren’t visually attractive. A textured bin or lidded container always lends a helping hand, I do this with small and odd size books that don’t look nice out on a bookshelf.

Now, after you’ve cleared your shelf and have a stack of books – what do you do?  Now I am a big re-seller of my items.  Sometimes it is not worth the time to sell items, but other times it is certainly worth a bit of my time to get a little cash for books that others might want.  I’ve sold on ebay, half.com and cragislist before and honestly the easiest has been another site called Cash 4 Books.  You look up your books online, they give you a quote, you ship them for free and you get paid!  Easy Peasy!

So don’t let those books sit around when they could be snagging you a few bucks to use elsewhere in your family budget!

Also, just a reminder that there is only 2 days left in the Back To School Boost for Moms ebook bundle sale!  These are some great books filled with practical information, tips and solutions to the problems we moms have and the best part – they don’t take up room on that bookshelf!
