Tackling tasks in the Weekly Household Planner:

Cleaning garage

This originally posted about a year ago, but I thought it was time for a refresher!  And, since I was hanging out all weekend with my daughter at college taking care of her while she was trying to recover form Shingles, I didn’t think you would mind.  🙂

Yes, it is that time of year!  It seems that over the winter we can accumulate a lot of extra stuff in our garages.  This task today can be as quick as you would like or more detailed.  You can simply tidy up your garage or you can go in for the major de-cluttering, the choice is up to you.  If you go in big, make sure you enlist some other family members.

Here are a few pointers to get you headed in the right direction.

Remove it All

Take everything out of your garage and put it in the driveway (well, nearly everything!)  It seems like a big project and it is – but this is the only way for you to see how much stuff you truly have.  You may find that when you have to put it back in the garage and find a location for it, you decide you just don’t need it anymore!

Sweep

This is the time to completely sweep the garage and get it all spic and span to replace the items you are keeping.  You know stuff gets all caught back in corners and crevices, so by having all the big items removed you can get that taken care of.

Put It Back

As you are replacing items back in the garage, determine the usefulness of every item.  If you do not have a use for an item, or have not used the item in over a year, it is probably time to get rid of it.  Sort items into piles like giveaway, sell on eBay, sell on Craigslist, give to a friend.  {If you need some tips to sell on Craigslist or eBay, grab my new ebook, “Become a Frugali$ta in 30 Days” that has all the tips and tricks you will need to know!)

Motivation

Take breaks while you are cleaning and put on some fun music to keep you motivated.  If you get discouraged just think of the satisfaction you will have when you have a clean garage and know where to find things.  And if you have been unable to park your car in the garage, just close your eyes and think of how lovely it will be to park INSIDE when the rain is pouring and you have to unload the groceries.

Celebrate!

When your driveway is clear of all the stuff, breath a huge sigh of relief.  Make sure you schedule follow up time to sell items you plan to sell and give items to friends.  If you want to make real progress, take all the ‘giveaway’ items directly to your local drop station immediately upon finishing the job.  You won’t have time to change your mind and the stuff will be gone!

When was the last time you really cleaned your garage?
