From Screamfree parenting by Hal Runkel, LMFT Quote of the Day: ” Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things put together. “ — Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) |
This is true of all things, but it is especially true when it comes to raising our children. They may remember the “big” things we do with them, like vacations, holidays, and school events. But they will be shaped more by the little things we do with them. Whenever we read a book or make a meal together, we are creating a connection that no huge event can replace.
But it’s not enough just to show up during those daily moments. You have to make them count – I’m not talking about teaching any great wisdom, but I am talking about really showing who you are during those times. Be as present as possible and act the way you want to be remembered when your kids are raising kids of their own. After all, It will happen before you know it. |
Boy, this one can give me one of those “ouch” moments. I can preach to you all that this is so important, but I certainly am no expert or by any means perfect at capturing all these moments with my own children! I guess this chalks up to being one of those things you are always striving for…..looking for those times when you just STOP what you are doing and sit with your child. Truly be in the moment……it is hard as busy moms, all the things we do in a day, trying to provide the best for our family. I hope I am not alone in this constant struggle to find a balance between getting the bathroom clean and listening to my son talk about how his new braces hurt his teeth or that he is so excited about his new “Batman” PS3 game. I just know that when I close my eyes at night, I pray that God will give me the strength and wisdom to make even better choices with my time tomorrow….I cannot do it alone and I am so thankful I am not dependent on my “own” to accomplish it.
