There are so many elements that can enter our spirit and create an uneasy and stressful feeling, especially during the Christmas season. It seems there is more to do which can often lead to frazzled days and exhausted nights. If you are looking to create a truly warm environment for everyone in your home, take note of a few things that can help make that happen.
Keep it tidy
This is true all the time, but even more important during the holiday season when you have expected as well as unexpected guests popping in. Instead of praying that no one comes by unannounced, wouldn’t it be great to be in a place where you can be excited to entertain even unexpected guests? If you keep things tidy by picking up just a little each day, you will feel more comfortable with the look in your home. If worrying about the whole house is too much, then only concentrate on areas that your guests will see, the entry, main powder room and family/kitchen room. Assign a family member each area and make that ‘their’ area to keep picked up and ready for guests.
Keep it clear
Countertops full of unopened mail can be visually stressful. Try to keep surfaces relatively clear in order to create a space that is uncluttered. Being able to see a countertop gives a sense of being “caught up” with tasks. If it is too hard to manage, then designate a drawer to put unopened Christmas cards instead of piling them on the countertop. Find places inside cupboards to place less used appliances that are scattered on your kitchen counters. This will make room for holiday baking or allowing the whole family to cook together.
Create Cozy
With the colder temperatures outside isn’t it wonderful when you can create a little cozy haven inside your home? Have blankets out and available for someone to snuggle up with and even a few soft pillows. If are you lucky enough to have a fireplace, make sure you are using it. There is nothing more “homey” than a fire burning in a fireplace, not only do you give your home an instant physically warm feeling, but it is visually warm too! Don’t forget to light candles and turn lights down to create a peaceful atmosphere.
Keep It Simple
It can become very overwhelming decorating your home. Why not put fewer holiday decorations out, the ones that truly have meaning to you. Instead of adding to the clutter, choose decorations that are simple, classic and create the atmosphere you desire. Too many things cluttering the tree or mantle can become very distracting, often less is more.
Tantalize senses
Turn off the TV and turn on the music. We really only get to enjoy Christmas music for a month, so why not allow it to permeate your home and soul? I have had Christmas music playing in our home the past few days and it changes everyone’s mood. There is something about being surrounded by the familiar songs from childhood that just does a body good! Music is great, but those smells of baking cookies and hot chocolate are really good. Create those scents with candles or a pot of water on the stove top with cinnamon and cloves. A live Christmas tree is always my favorite this time of year, but you can create that same idea with a strategically place fragrant wreath or bouquet too.
A truly peaceful home is made up of peaceful hearts and relationships, but if you give a little extra attention to the physical aspects in your home, you can help create a place of refuge, especially during the busy holiday season.
