Weekly Household Quick Tip

Tips for tackling tasks in the Weekly Household Planner: Clean Carpets If you are lucky enough to have wood floors in most of your house – rejoice!  For those of us, which includes me…..sadly, I have room upon room of carpeted floor.  It makes some parts of life easy, but other parts extremely difficult. With two big dogs, 4 kids and daily life, the carpet takes a beating.  Every time we get close to having the funds to rip it out and put in hardwood, something always comes up.  So I adjust my expectations and patterns to deal with the carpeting. Here is how I meet the challenge of keeping our carpet as clean as I can!

Vacuum often

Even though the Weekly Household Planner may only list vacuuming certain rooms once a week, I add it to my task list on other days.  It is a must-do, not only for the appearance of the floors, but my comfort level.  It causes me a bit of anxiety to have messy floors {yes…..personal issue, I know!}

No Shoes

We are comfortable with not wearing shoes in our house.  It is certainly not mandatory, but it sure helps keep the dirt out.  Everyone has slippers and we just have made it a habit to take our ‘outside’ shoes off and place our ‘inside shoes’ on.

Deal with Spills

If you spill anything on the carpet; take a paper towel and pat down on the spill until it is absorbed onto the paper towel.  Don’t just use a rag to rub in the stain or spill, it makes it worse!

Use Rugs and Mats

Whenever possible, use door mats to have your family wipe their shoes so nothing is tracked onto the carpet.  This goes for pets too!  If you can have feet and paws leave their dirty prints elsewhere, you have less to clean inside.

Invest in a Carpet Cleanerhoover

This has been the biggest helper for me.  When someone spills, or mud gets tracked in, I can immediately take care of it and not sweat it!  Pulling out the carpet cleaner for a quick job or taking the afternoon to thoroughly clean a room gives me peace of mind.  We have really liked the Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge that we bought on amazon a couple years ago.  It was a good purchase, cleans well and shipped to us for free!  We use to have a Bissell and we hated it, this one is much easier to use, clean and has held up over a lot of use!! While these are my tips to keeping our carpet ‘cleaner’, I know there are other great ways.  I don’t have any incredible recipes for spot removal or special cleaners, homemade is often best!  I find that good hot water is my best friend, especially in the carpet cleaner.  Excess soap residue can actually damage your carpet and make them appear dirty, so be careful with that. Preventative measures are the best way to avoid soiling any carpet, no matter how long you’ve had it. What is your biggest trick for keeping your carpet clean? Susan signature       photo credit
