Creating a Haven for Your Family

Creating A Haven For Your Family

My dear mamas, I felt like I needed to come to you all with some words of hope. Last week I was really in a place of feeling deeply all the things that are attempting to distract us from our main role, which is being the wonderful homemakers we are destined to be.

Right now, more than ever, our families need us.

They need us to provide a safe place to come home to.

A place to feel secure.

A place that feels like a haven from the outside world.

However, it can feel overwhelming to fill that role when we are exhausted, full of anxiety, and feeling hopeless.

My desire is to share with you some practical ways you can shift your focus back to making your home a “hope” filled haven.

Prepare Your Mind

I will hammer this point home first and foremost every time I talk about getting ourselves ready for the day. You must take time first thing in the morning to fill your mind with God’s word.

Whether it’s five minutes or thirty minutes, take the time needed to feed yourself truth. You cannot be the best version of yourself when you are drawing on yesterday’s leftovers. This is one reason why I have been sharing my YouVersion devotionals and inviting anyone to come along. (I share these invitations in my weekly email as well as on my Instagram stories. It’s easy (the app is right on your phone), they are short both in duration and also time commitment each day, and they are full of truth. You need to be equipped with that to go to battle each day for your family.

Fill Your Surroundings With Meaning

Now, as someone who just came off the road of traveling for nearly a year with very few “things,” I am not intending this to be an invitation to go buy stuff and fill all the nooks and crannies of your home. Rather, I want you to truly evaluate the things in your space. Do the things hanging on your walls have true heart-felt value? Do they make you think of a special time or remember a special person? Do the dishes you use bring you joy? Do the trinkets you have and display items fill your heart or bring you dread? When creating a haven for your family, it’s amazing how changing out a few little things can make a big shift in your home’s energy.

It may be time to declutter and remove some items that do not bring you joy. Less is truly more. I learned that after we sold our home last year, along with about 80% of our things, and traveled the country. Having fewer things was so freeing, and I really focused on the things that I did have and how they were very special to me.

Fill Your Ears

Another one of my favorite ways to shift the energy in my home is to play worship music. It can literally change how you view your day, how your kids respond to you, and how you meet the tasks on your schedule. Try it! I will often turn on music when I first come down into my kitchen area so it is on when everyone else starts coming into that area. It truly does bring calm to the mind and body.

I love soft, easy, and gentle music that has true worship as the base. I find myself singing along and will even find my family doing the same. It helps all parts of our body. Did you know research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory? I will take that and add to it the benefits of worshipping our creator!

Diffuse Those Essential Oils

The link between inhaling essential oils and emotional benefits is all over and widely known. The connection between scent and our emotions, as well as memory recall, is amazing. While diffusing essential oils, you can absolutely change your mood, help others find a more positive outlook, and keep emotions from getting out of hand. Believe me, the science is there, but I have more personal experience than anything else in the last eight years!

Grab your diffuser and take a seemingly simple bottle of Orange essential oil and push ON. In a few moments, your entire room will begin to smell so good and your mood will instantly be uplifted. This is such an incredibly easy way to create a haven your family will love to come home to. Imagine having everyone come in the door to a wonderful smelling home where they can instantly feel relief from the outside world!

I love using all variations of oils in my home. It’s a fun experience everyone can get involved in.

Find Hope

Finally, find ways to bring HOPE into your day. I will leave you with several verses that you can repeat daily. Journal through them, post them on sticky notes throughout your home, and let the truth seep deep into your soul.

If you do not fill your mind with truth, it will be filled with whatever you are absorbing around you, and that is not always positive. Be proactive, take action, and know choosing hope will feed your faith. Allowing fear in will kill your hope.

What other ways can you think of for creating a haven for your family?

“There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.” —Proverbs 23:18

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” —Romans 15:13

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” —Deuteronomy 31:6

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” —Isaiah 41:10
