6 Strategies for Coping with Back-to-School Uneasiness

6 Strategies for Coping with Back-to-School Uneasiness

It’s back-to-school time – and even though this isn’t my first rodeo, as some say – it can create tension and uneasiness for everyone. Adjusting from summer to the routine of the school year can bring some unknowns (especially if you have a child starting a new school, kindergarten, or transitioning to a new program as these are pivotal times).

When kids experience uneasiness about going back to school, it can have an effect on parents as well. It seems like there’s nothing you can do, and the closer the first day of school gets, the more miserable parents and kids feel. Some practical tips on how to ease this apprehension, though, can help alleviate the back-to-school fears. Here are some ideas that we’ve put into action in our home.

1. Try to Understand

Maybe you didn’t ever suffer from this kind of anxiety as a child; or maybe you did, but you still just want your child to get over it. It can be hard to be sympathetic if you did not experience this type of uneasiness, but compassion is what your child seeks.

Psychologists recommend a bit of understanding – while the uneasiness should not be “calling the shots,” the fact that your child is feeling very real fear should be respected. Your child needs some coping mechanisms, and that means you need to address the fear rather than denying it.

2. Put Things in Perspective

School can seem big and scary to a child. Psychologists recommend “putting the fear in its place” – identify the fear and give your child power over it. Use Scripture to help guide your child and help their fear.

I can do all this through him who gives me strength. – Phil 4:13

Tell your child to repeat this verse in times of struggle – perhaps you can write it out on a note card and place it in their backpack? Look for scripture jewelry to give real physical presence to a verse and allow them to wear it to school.

3. Know Your Teacher

It can make all the difference if your child knows their teacher. Try to set up more than one meeting with the teacher before the school year starts, so your child will be going to see a familiar face. Take a tour or two of the school and the new classroom, too. It is great to find some new friends before that first day as well.

4. Be Confident

Sometimes, parents can inadvertently “feed” their child’s uneasiness. If you are anxious about your child’s anxiety, it can make the situation worse. Try to be confident in your child’s ability to make it through the school day. While understanding your child’s feelings is important, inflating them is not. Let your child know she can do it by being confident and decisive in leaving her.

5. Saying Goodbye

Some experts recommend a “goodbye ritual” to help ease transitions back into school. This can help a child feel more secure – if you say goodbye the same way every day, then perhaps your child will be more confident that you will return the same way, too.

Try coming up with something unique to your relationship with your child – a special handshake, phrase, or promise for later in the day (just make sure you follow through on any promise).

6. Natural Courage Support

We love using natural alternatives in our home, all plant-based. A few of our favorite essential oils that help to promote confidence and courage are:

Valor We love this one for balance and empowering confidence. We often will diffuse this one in the morning before school and then apply topically to wrists or the back of the neck before my son goes out the door. Valor II is a version available now, but watch for the original to be back really soon! He also wears a leather necklace that we can apply it to, so he can smell the aroma during the day.

Peace and Calming This is another great one. Right now we have Peace & Calming II, another version which can help ease uneasiness in all kinds of situations. Another favorite in the diffuser!

Stress Away This one is best for the whole family, but really great for moms! I love using the Stress Away roll-on to apply to my wrists. Its wonderful vanilla and lime scent is crazy good for calming me down.

Getting Started with Essential Oils

My inbox is crammed full of wonderful emails from you all asking me how to get started using Young Living essential oils, what oils I recommend and how I’ve managed to help support a healthy immune system for me and my entire family. ¬†So I am here to answer some frequently asked questions.

I can hardly believe it’s been almost two years since I took control and was empowered with my health needs and can honestly say I have never felt better.

Today’s post will help you get some questions answered and give you the chance to begin your journey using essential oils.

How do I use essential oils?

I felt a bit lost when I first started looking at what I could do to improve my health.  There was a lot of information out there and many alternatives to my traditional way of caring for my health.   But I had to make some changes for my emotional and physical health.  It was critical for me and my family Рmost especially with my diagnosis with an auto-immune disease.

In our home we diffuse essential oils, apply them topically, use them in detox baths, add to recipes and we also take some internally when needed.  After much research and trial uses of different essential oils from many companies, I chose Young Living.  Any recommendations I give on how we use them anywhere on my blog, only refer to Young Living.

One thing is key when you begin using essential oils. ¬†You have to change your perspective a bit with natural additions to supporting your body and it’s immune system. ¬†Our society has been accustomed to taking a pill for an ailment and then not thinking about it for another 12 hours. ¬†With essential oils, there is a difference. ¬†You will find greater success using them more frequently and more consistently. ¬†When I wake up in the morning and get that feeling of not quite being 100%,¬†I am consistent with application, sometimes every hour until I see improvement.

How should I begin?

This is probably the most common question I get. ¬†Usually, unless there is a special circumstance, I always suggest someone purchase the EO Premium Starter Kit. ¬†This is by far the best value, it’s the only thing Young Living has that is over 50% off retail. ¬†It also has the best variety of oils to use in your home. ¬†It is an investment, I will kid you not…. but if you have to save up for six months in order to get the Premium Starter Kit do it! ¬†Or ask for it for Christmas. ¬†The diffuser is one of the biggest benefits of the Starter Kit and it is a MUST have item.

If you are interested in another Premium Starter Kit, there are others you can choose from, but the EO Premium Starter Kit is my recommendation for sure.

Will you be here to help me along the way?

For all my new members, I send them a reference guide that is crucial to understanding all about essential oils. ¬†You will find all the information you’ll need from different oils and their uses to suggestions for different health concerns – right at your fingertips.

I also have a Private Facebook page where you can get support and find resources just for my community.  Everyone loves this little haven to feel comfortable asking questions and sharing experiences.  I also participate and host monthly education classes online for my community Рhelping everyone learn more and expand their knowledge base.

New beginnings with anything are hard and a transition, I get that.  Precisely why I love to help support my community of oily users.  It is and has been a learning curve for me as well and such a joy to see others experience the benefits of adding natural alternatives to their lifestyle.

If you are ready to get your kit on the way to you Рhop over to this page for more information.  If you are ready to sign up as a wholesale member and get your kit Рgo HERE.

After you sign up and order your kit you will receive a Welcome email full of great information to get you started while you wait for your kit to arrive.  I so look forward to helping you on this journey!!

Stocking a Natural Winter Wellness Cabinet

If we went back even just two years ago in my life, at this time of year I would be scouring the ads and running all around town doing the drugstore game to get all kinds of stuff to be prepared for winter – for free or nearly free.

Fast forward now, 18 months later and I am more aware of natural remedies that are in fact more effective at helping support my immune system and keep it in tip top shape.  As a busy mom with kids, a husband that travels I need to be smart in this area for the sake of my family.

Here is what I have in my Wellness Cabinet for this winter:

Sovereign Colloidal Silver

Colloidal Silver is a new item in our wellness cabinet and I am so excited to have it. ¬†Since I have become more health conscious and holistic with caring for my body, I’ve learned a bit about ¬†Colloidal Silver!! ¬†So, with the recent outbreaks happening all around our area, I have added it to our cabinet. ¬†I love that it is pure and has no added ingredients – big criteria in our home. ¬†It is fabulous for immune support and you can read more about why you need it in your house too! ¬†Here is another article that explains a bit more about it as well. I am certainly not a medical professional and some of the lingo can get my tongue all tied up too!

Epsom Salts

I have shared my love of Epsom salts before and how they can help your body with expelling toxins.   Cheap, effective and easy to use  Рwhat more could you want from a product for your body?  Our entire family has been able to fight off bugs, occasional body aches, muscle soreness and more with a great Epsom Salt bath.

“Comprised of the minerals magnesium and sulfate, Epsom salt is a natural exfoliant and anti-inflammation remedy that can be used to treat dry skin, sore muscles, small wounds and even to fight illness.” ¬†– Dr. Oz show

Apple Cider Vinegar81+U3aFeYeL._SL1500_

If you’ve tried Apple Cider Vinegar before you know it tastes awful – really!! ¬†But last year when I was trying to FREE my sinuses¬†, I resorted to using it and guess what – it was very effective in clearing my congestion and helping my body fight. ¬†Seriously, within about 5 minutes of taking a tablespoon in water my nose would begin to run like a faucet – it was amazing. ¬† ¬†The ACV alkalizes the body and helps the immune system fight off viruses and bacteria very effectively. ¬†We use this brand of ACV and I can tell the difference in taste from other brands…. this one is just a bit more “doable!”

Thieves, Immupower, Exodus II, Oregano

My stash of essential oils has taken over my wellness cabinet!!!    HOORAY!!!!

Thieves – I’ve shared about this amazing immune supporting oil here and how it is a powerful blend to support the immune system. ¬† It is unique and powerful!

Immupower РThis is another blend that I incorporated when supporting good overall health  and began using it daily as an immune support, just on the bottom of my feet.  It is a powerful blend of Hyssop, Mountain Savory, Cistus, Ravintsara (I love this chest soother I made with a blend that contains Ravintsara!) Frankincense, Oregano, Clover, Cumin and Idaho Tansy.

Exodus II РThis blend has aromatics that some researchers believe were used by Aaron, the brother of Moses, to protect the Israelites from a plague.  More important, modern science shows that the oils in this blend contain immune-stimulating compounds Рmy immune system loves this!  It contains, Olive oil, Myrrh, Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, Calamus, Hyssop, Galbanum, Spikenard and Frankincense.

Oregano – It’s stinky I tell ya – but it works well!! ¬†This is another powerful one for immune support . ¬†I usually take this oil internally, the Vitality line (I only use Young Living Oils and would never recommend taking another essential oil internally) and I also place on topical Oregano on the bottoms of my feet.

Elderberry Syrup714vg-lMSaL._SL1500_

I made my first batch of homemade Elderberry Syrup last winter and I am preparing for my next one.   It is really easy to make with this recipe here.  I have found it to be very effective in fighting off cough and congestion too.  If you do not wish to make your own with dried Elderberries, you can buy it pre-made, I like this brand.

61w75vOnUCL._SY679_Vitamin D3

I began taking Vitamin D3 about a year ago on a regular basis {I take this brand}.  I have found that when I begin to feel a bit under the weather, if I up my dose to several thousand IU a day I can defeat it before it grabs hold or beat it much quicker.  This is a secret weapon in our house!  I take Vitamin D3 regularly anyhow to help with my Health Challenges, so it is an inexpensive and effective way to help me take care of my body.
