Welcome to Day 10 of 31 Days of Mom Mojo – Tackling Time Management.
Okay, get ready, we are going to talk again about getting up early. I know, it is a subject most hate to hear and I may be beating a dead horse into the ground for those of you who are still waking when your kids do. If getting up early is just not in the cards for you, perhaps there will be an alternative for those of you . If you take some of these tasks and do them the evening before, I believe you may be able to help bring about relief.
Waking up to a screaming alarm clock is not the most pleasant way to begin your day. If it is followed by racing around and dashing out the door, you have no time to manage in the mornings. No wonder you feel that your life is out of control and you aren’t getting done everything that needs to be done. Get a better start to get a better result for your day.
Did you get up earlier when I challenged you on Day 1? How did that feel, was it a good thing?
By waking up earlier, you have time to wake up gradually, take a shower and enjoy a cup of coffee or juice. This is a kinder way to get your body and your brain oriented to the day. Who likes to dive into the day without an adjustment period? Not me! When I make this a priority, I start the day out with more clarity and purpose, I’m a more cheerful, relaxed and the best part – more organized to meet the day.
An even better way to turn morning from dread to enjoyable is to get up earlier, even as much as an hour earlier to set the tone for your day. Spend quiet time reading a devotional, the Bible or put on some praise music to fill your morning. I know I cannot function to the best of my ability when I do not get this time, it is my natural stress buster!
Coffee is not breakfast
Take time to eat breakfast. This is a poor habit moms have gotten themselves into. We take a lot of time and effort researching the best for our kids, yet fail to follow through for our own benefit. How many of you skip breakfast or think coffee with cream is a complete breakfast?
Even a quick breakfast is better than shoving food in your mouth while driving or sipping that non-fat mocha you grabbed as you raced through the Starbucks drive thru. The fifteen minutes that you give your body nourishment to start the day will help you to avoid the mid-morning blood sugar drop. Don’t grab toast and eat it as you are packing the car either. (I know all the tricks ladies!) You can find several fast options that offer better nutrition and take the time to eat, not inhale it.
Think of what your kids might do if you actually gave them 10 minutes of your time and had a bowl of cereal or yogurt with them in the morning? You could even use this bit of family time for a morning devotional with them.
Get to Know Your Day
With an early rising time, you also have time to check your calendar and have a big picture of what’s happening in the day. As you are sitting down for your quick breakfast or pouring your cup of coffee, look over your calendar to preview what you need to get done today. Not only are you able to review your calendar, but also you to-do list and see what truly needs to get accomplished. Remember our Must-Do’s? Have those handy.
You are more likely to remember that you have a doctor appointment right after you drop the kids at school and a lunch date with a friend right before you run back to school to get the kids. By bringing along what you need for your entire day you aren’t wasting precious time going back to get items you could have brought in the beginning, if you had planned a bit better.
When your kids see you planning your day like this, you are providing a great example for them. You will be amazed at what they pick up when they SEE you do something rather than you just TELLING them to do something.
After just as few days, you’ll see why starting the morning earlier is the best self management option to maximize your productivity for the entire day, reduce stress and navigate your way through your day successfully.
